Brightly colored jockey silks made their first recorded appearance in early horse racing events in Italy during the Middle Ages; riders chose brightly colored outfits to distinguish themselves from their competitors.
Traditionally, the jacket isn’t form fitting. Today however, these materials can be designed to form fit the body, adding an aerodynamic advantage. In horse-racing, anything that can help gain a lead is a plus.
